Connotations & Denotations

 


Denotation - 

You can see in the advert a young boy who looks exhausted and thirsty. At the top, you can see it says the company name 'WaterAid' which is a company who helps poor people who don't have access to clean water.

Connotations - 

The advert tries to get people's attention by stating the phrase ' Dig toilets Not graves'. The connotation of the company name on the advert shows that it's obvious they are trying to help a family who are poor or don't have access to certain things such as water, food, warm showers, etc. In the background, you can't see exactly where the location is and how dry and dirty the area looks which shows they need help and donations. The word 'aid' in the company's name shows that they help people in need. They try to dig toilets for people so they can use the toilet in a more sanitary way and will prevent people from getting diseases.

Analysis - 

The advert helps the audience understand the struggles of people around the world. In addition, the text that states 'Not graves' indicate that people could possibly die from being poor and not having any toilets or water.
